Apple Inc., the all things “i” company, claims to have created 514,000 U.S. jobs in all 50 states ranging from engineering, manufacturing and retail to the growing iOS app industry.

A study for Apple done by Analysis Group noted 304,000 jobs created in the U.S. include Texas workers who make processors for iOS products; Corning employees in Kentucky and New York who manufacture the glass for iPhones, and FedEx and UPS delivery people.

On the app side, Apple counts more than 210,000 iPhone and iOS jobs in the U.S. Apple says it has paid more than $4 billion in royalties for the more than 550,000 apps that are in its store.

The company also has 21 U.S. call centers in 15 states, including 7,700 AppleCare advisers, 600 of whom are college students.

Here’s how Apple breaks down its own company employment:

  • 70,000 employees worldwide
  • 47,000 in the U.S., two-thirds of worldwide headcount
  • 7,800 U.S. jobs created in 2011
  • 19,500 U.S. jobs added since 2008
  • 7,000 construction jobs projected to build Apple’s new Cupertino campus
  • 50 states with full-time Apple employees

California is a major beneficiary of Apple employment.  Apple’s current headquarters in Cupertino in the Bay Area has about 2,600 workers. Steve Jobs announced plans last year before his death to build a “spaceship” building in Cupertino that would house 12,000 employees by 2015.

The company also notes it has significant employment at its Apple retail stores:

  • 27,350 U.S. retail employees
  • 246 U.S. stores in 44 states
  • 100+ locally hired employees per store on average
  • 4,000 retail employees in the Greater New York area
  • 3,500 U.S. retail employees who have worked at Apple stores for more than five years
  • 20,000 construction-related jobs created to build Apple stores in the U.S. since 2001

The report comes at a time when questions have been raised about American companies that are taking advantage of lower costs and tax breaks by hiring overseas.

Apple, in particular, has come in for criticism for labor practices at Foxconn in China, which manufactures a lot of Apple’s components and products.
